Position Summary

Under the general supervision of the Manager – Network Operations, the Network Operations Technician performs installation, testing, repair and routine maintenance of network telecommunications equipment.     

Major Responsibilities

  1. Installs, maintains, tests and repairs network based TDM, wireless, IP voice and data switching, power, transmission, fibre optic and other miscellaneous telecommunications equipment including hardware and software
  2. Installs, tests and repairs other network based equipment and services, voice mail, alarms services and emergency reporting services
  3. Performs work on network distribution frames, including the processing, connecting, routine maintenance, testing and repair of customer voice and data circuits and other network circuits
  4. Accesses and updates the mechanized work and service order systems to ensure timely, efficient and accurate delivery of Consumer Markets’ records and billing
  5. Provides training and technical assistance to other employees as directed
  6. Works in accordance with all applicable Health and Safety legislation
  7. Performs all other duties as assigned

Qualifications

  • Degree or diploma in Electrical/Electronics or Computer Engineering Technology from a University or College together with CCNA certification, or the ability to obtain the CCNA certification within six months from date of hire
  • Possesses a working knowledge of telecommunications engineering principles, IP routing and related equipment
  • Experience with TDM, Wireless, SONET, ATM, Frame Relay, HDLC, TCP/IP, various IP routing protocols, VLANs, VoIP,  Ethernet, Cisco IOS, JUNOS and/or Unix/Linux would be an asset
  • Demonstrated problem solving and decision making skills with the ability to work effectively in a team environment
  • Excellent computer skills with an emphasis on business software applications, such as MS Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint)
  • Must be capable of issuing and comprehending clearly understandable written and oral instructions

Condition of Employment

Must not be colour-blind. May be required to work shift work and standby. Some travel within the serving area is required. Must possess a valid driver’s licence.
